Leaders Creek Tides

October 12th, 2019

For approximate tides at Leaders Creek boat ramp, NTG advise to add 1 hour and 30 minutes to the Darwin Harbour predictions.  Based on this, we suggest a minimum of 2.8m to safely launch and retrieve your boat. Allow more if you have a larger vessel. (We provide information in good faith and to the best of our knowledge and will not be held liable for any loss, damage or expense resulting from use of or reliance on any information we have provided.)

Bondi Vet comes to Leaders Creek

July 20th, 2015

Some of you might have seen the Bondi Vet program on Saturday 11th July.  Dr Chris Brown and his team made a visit to Leaders Creek to have a look at our resident Sea Eagle that had been shot with an arrow. They were not able to catch her and remove the arrow but it was good to have some advise on her condition.  She seems to be managing ok and we are hopeful that this remains the case.  She is still spotted occasionally near the mouth of Leaders Creek.

A very big thank-you to Dr Chris Brown and team!

Also many thanks to;

Peter Barnes (Territory Guided Fishing) for your work behind the scenes. Your time and the use of your boat was very much appreciated.

Tom Nichols and croc management team who were quick to capture a nuisance croc at the Leaders Creek boat ramp.

Mooka Dan (Brother) for your help, not only on the day, but during your entire stay.

e aware of the Crocs!

September 1st, 2014

You must be mindful of crocodiles at any Top End waterway.  It’s easy to become complacent when you have been to the same spot many times without sighting a big croc.  Please always be aware that they are about.  This 4.1m Croc, weighing approx. 500kg was removed from Leaders Creek Boat Ramp on Sunday 31st August.  Thanks to Tom Nichols and his team, including Leaders Creek staff and campers.

DANGER! Another “larger” croc was sighted at the ramp on the same day.  All ramp users are urged to use extreme caution. Do not enter or stand near the water’s edge. The trap will stay in an attempt to trap the other croc.  It’s likely that this situation is a result of dumping of bait scraps & fish carcasses at the ramp by fisho’s who have no respect or consideration for others.

For the safety and consideration of all ramp users, please do not deposit any bait scraps or fish carcasses near the ramp, or place crab pots in the vicinity of the ramp. Also, when planning a trip, keep in mind that it’s harder to get your boat back on your trailer when the tide is low. Always come in with enough water so that you don’t have to wade in the water to hook up your boat.

There’s plenty of great fishing to be had. Respect the local wildlife and their habitat. Be responsible and take all due care.

Sea Eagle Update

August 6th, 2014

These photos were taken by Brian of the White Breasted Sea Eagle swooping down to retrieve a fish. He, along with other fisho’s  regularly feed her to help her gain her confidence and keep her healthy and strong. Brian has observed that the arrow sometimes deflects in the water and at times hinders  her efforts to pick up a meal, but she is a persistent girl and he rarely returns to base without seeing her fly away with her family after a good feed. On a positive note... these photos show that the arrow is lodged in her leg, hence her survival. She has also been successful in rearing 2 young chicks, which are now fully fledged and can often be seen flying around with mum and dad, or perched alongside... on their favorite dining room tree. Brian was nearly successful in catching her 4 weeks ago with the assistance of Malcolm , Samantha and Kim.  He will continue his endeavor to see that she is captured and attended to. How could anybody do this?

June 6th, 2014

This beautiful White Breasted Sea Eagle has been observed for over a month at Leaders Creek with an arrow lodged in her body.  I’m disgusted that *somebody could do this, and I strongly encourage anybody with any information to contact Parks and Wildlife regarding the matter on  8995 5054.

I have assisted Wildlife rangers on one rescue mission in my boat to capture the big girl, but our attempt was unsuccessful. I have since made more attempts and intend to persevere until she is captured and attended to.  She seems to be coping well under the circumstances with her partner protecting her and helping her feed.

This pair, (they usually pair for life-for 30 to 40 years) have been territorial to the Leaders Creek water ways for over 10 years, according to Parks and Wildlife. They are habitual feeders in this region and it is always entertaining to watch their aerobic flight displays. Many local fisho’s as tourists visiting from interstate and overseas have had the pleasure of seeing these beautiful birds in the creek and often capture the moments on camera and comment on their beauty and awesomeness.

It is concerning that the nesting season is approaching and, as you can imagine, it will be difficult for this bird to sit on her nest with the arrow protruding from her. I have sought and received some assistance from two business’s so far, in our quest to capture this magnificent bird and have her attended to as quickly as possible. Please contact me on 8983 5009 if you can offer any assistance by way of your time, equipment, or financial assistance relative to rescue cost’s.

Thanks to the following business for their assistance so far:

Craig’s Fishing Warehouse

NTAP PTY LTD

and thanks to Noel and Nathan for their time and help.

We’ll keep this blog updated with any progress on the rescue.

Thanks and regards,

Brian

Entertainment Shed under construction

May 29th, 2014

We are endeavoring to improve the facilities for guests at Leaders Creek Fishing Base. Our aim is to make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable... and more family friendly.  An entertainment shed proved a popular idea from visitors last year and we are pleased to announce that this is now going ahead. Shed Boss commenced installation this month and we look forward to making it available for use as soon as possible.  We’ll also be installing new toilets, showers and more eco tents later this year.

* This project is being co-funded by the Australian Government.

Dog friendly

February 20th, 2014

We’ve noticed a lot of people like to bring their dogs fishing.  We currently allow dogs on leads but understand this may not be comfortable for your dog’s entire stay. We can’t allow dogs to roam around freely out of respect and safety for other campers (and your dog), so we’ve come up with the idea of a holding pen that you can hire and erect at your campsite for $5 per day.  If you are interested, please call and book before your visit.  We hope this will make your stay (and your dogs) more enjoyable.

WARNING—Ramp currently out of action!

January 29th, 2014

We had a heavy downpour of rain last night (166mm) and a lot of dirt has been washed down the ramp and has piled up towards the bottom.  If you have a small dinghy and are keen to carry it over/around you might be able to launch but there’s definitely no trailer access right now.  We are trying to get the matter sorted as quickly as possible and will keep you posted here.

Dylan’s biggest fish ever… so far

January 28th, 2014

A bit of rain couldn’t stop avid young fisherman Dylan last week.  He got a new rod and reel for his 8th Birthday from Tackle World Coolalinga and was keen to test it out.  It soon earned the name Hot Rod as he caught and released many small snapper, catfish and baby Jewie, before landing this 71cm Jewie and taking it home for dinner.

Tash (the family dog) approves of Dylan’s Jewie.

Lost anchor but landed Jewie

October 18th, 2013

Ty, Cassandra and kids visited with Howard Springs Tavern FC last weekend.  After Ty hooked this Jewie it wrapped round their anchor rope and just kept going. The braid cut through the rope and left them with no anchor and chain. They were very happy though when the fish was landed…. and they kept it!

Howard Springs Tavern FC Action Weekend

October 17th, 2013

There was lots of action all day and night when the Howard Springs Tavern Fishing Club visited last weekend…(wonder if anybody got any sleep).  There was plenty of fishing action with some good fish caught in the creek and out wide.  Lots of drinking by a well behaved crowd ensured they were wet from the inside too.  The BBQ was fired up and smelt great.  Needless to say.. when questioned who was the chef extraordinaire, most put their hand up.  It was a pleasure having the club visit Leaders Creek and we look forward to seeing you again. Thanks guys and girls  — Brian & Ann

Farewell to Chris and Deneise

February 25, 2012

After 10 years as Lord of the Ramp at Leaders Creek, Chris Edwards is retiring and appointing a successor.  Brian Bulner will receive his official appointment as the new Lord of the Ramp Sunday 26th February 2012 at a farewell BBQ held at Leaders Creek Fishing Base.  Chris and Deneise have provided a great service over the past 10 years and will be missed by many.  After 10 years of going backwards (reversing down the ramp), Chris says it’s now time to go forwards. He has also made it clear that he won’t miss the early awakenings at 5 in the morning.

New owners, Brian and Ann,  would like to thank Chris and Deneise for their assistance in the transition process and wish them all the best for the future.  Brian and Ann extend a warm welcome to existing customers and are looking forward to settling in and meeting you on your upcoming visits.

All are welcome to farewell Chris and Deneise – 3pm Sunday 26th Feb.
